Why Your Body Can’t Clear LDL Without T3: The Thyroid–Cholesterol Connection
If you’ve ever been told your LDL cholesterol is creeping up—despite eating well and exercising—it’s time to consider your thyroid.
Your thyroid produces two primary hormones: T4 (storage) and T3 (active). T3 is the hormone that actually tells your cells—and your metabolism—what to do. When you are hypothyroid or when your body has trouble converting T4 → T3, metabolism slows and cholesterol handling suffers.
Here’s the critical part many doctors never explain:
The liver needs T3 to make LDL receptors. Without T3, the liver can’t clear LDL from the bloodstream.
That means—even with a pristine diet—LDL may stay elevated because the liver simply doesn’t have the instructions it needs to remove it.
Common clues that T3 may be low:
High LDL or total cholesterol
Weight gain or slowed metabolism
Fatigue, brain fog, depression
Cold hands/feet, constipation, thinning hair
This is why labs must go deeper than TSH or T4 alone. If free T3 is low, your cells are still under-powered—including the cells in your liver.
💡 When we optimize thyroid function and support T4 conversion → T3, liver clearance improves. Many patients see their cholesterol normalize without relying solely on statins.
